Offset Printing

What is Offset Printing?
Offset printing uses aluminum plates to transfer an image onto a rubber blanket. This image is then rolled onto a sheet of paper. It is sometimes referred to as offset lithography and is usually used for higher volume printing.

A Brief Guide to the Offset Printing Process

Offset printing is a standard printing method that becomes more cost-effective as the quantity increases. It can be used for both black and white or color printing. It uses aluminum plates to transfer an image onto a rubber blanket. This image is then rolled onto a sheet of paper. Offset printing utilizes high-quality ink and is a method available only to some professional printers.

Step #1 – Prepress
Once the print files are received by prepress, they are preflighted and imposed as a print-ready digital file, and the negative films are then created. Images from the negatives are transferred to printing plates in the same way as traditional photographs are developed. When these plates are exposed to light, a chemical reaction takes place, allowing an ink-receptive coating to be activated.

Step #2 – The Press Run
The large sheets of paper stock are placed into the press. From here they are ready to be printed on. The printing process is very fast, and the press speed can reach up to 15,000 impressions per hour.

Step #3 – The Inking Process
The ink is fed to the plates through a series of rollers. The rollers distribute the ink from the ink fountain onto the plates. The image areas pick up the ink from ink rollers, and each plate then transfers its image to a rubber blanket that finally transfers the image to the paper.

Step #4 – Color and Registration Control
Registration is a process which involves the alignment of the printing plates as they apply their respective color portion of the image that is being printed. At the same time, the color is monitored as the ink is released into the units depending on how much is required to achieve the desired color effect.

Step #4 – Coating and Lamination
If the job requires a coating, the sheet is flooded with the desired coating substance and then cured or left to dry. Alternatively, the job can receive a different finish such as lamination, where a film is applied on top of the sheet.

Step #5 – Bindery
This is the final stage of the print production process. The now-printed and now-coated paper is cut and, when required, folded, put together in the correct order, and/or bound using a stitcher. Other tasks that are part of bindery include scoring, gluing, die cutting, perforating, and more.
